Monuments and wondrous archaeological sites in Thiva

With such a long history, it is only logical that Thiva and the wider territory has a lot to offer to modern travellers. The monuments of Thiva are certainly a good reason for a tour that combines historical context and modern reality, in a landscape of unique beauty.

Thiva offers a wealth of archaeological sites and monuments: the ancient theatre of Kaveirion, the remains of the Mycenaean palace “Kadmeio”, the remains of the temple of Apollo Isminios, the tombs of Amphion and Zethus, the Mycenaean chamber tombs of the children of Oedipus, the Fountain of Dirce etc.

The archaeological sites and monuments are many and the visitor will find them scattered throughout the municipality. Among the local communities stand out – apart from Thebes – for their historical and cultural value:

  • Plataea, famous because of the battle of Plataea in 479 BC between the Greeks and the Persians. The area is an archaeological site
  • Lefktra, known for the battle of Lefktra 371 BC, one of the major battles of antiquity, in terms of military tactics, as the system of the “Oblique Order” was applied in it. There is the famous trophy of Epaminondas
  • Vagia, close to which there is the Sphingion Mountain, where the Sphinx, the mythical monster that spread terror with its insoluble enigma, lived according to Pausanias.
  • the seaside settlement of Alyki, known in antiquity as Sipha or Tipha, which was the port of the Thespians and it is said that Argo, the ship that carried Jason in the Argonautic quest, was built there. The fortification wall of the citadel is also preserved there.
  • the seaside settlement of Livadostra, known in antiquity as Kreusis. The fortification wall of the citadel of ancient Kreusis is preserved in good condition with towers of the 4th century BC with an original length of about 300m. On a low hill opposite the citadel of Kreusis there is a medieval tower of the 14th century.
  • Thisvi, which has a long heroic tradition as Homer mentions it in the list of cities that took part in the Trojan war. There are remains of the fortification (4th century BC) and the tower is preserved.
