The Forest of Moschopodi has a prominent place among the natural treasures of Thiva. A large area of greenery with remarkable botanical wealth, stretching next to Thiva. It offers residents and of course visitors opportunities for environmental education, quality recreation and sports.

The hills Megaliand Mikri Psilorachi rise in the centre, the north is defined by the hill Koumerki and the east by the hill Soros (547m.).
Lush and deep green Mediterranean bushes colour the landscape with vibrant touches all year round. They are mostly made up of evergreen shrubs with hard leathery leaves. Thus, they limit transpiration and retain moisture during the dry summer. Pistacia, kermes oak and heather are among the local plants in the Mediterranean shrublands.

Many are aromatic, such as thyme and Gallipoli rose, which flood the landscape with scents, especially in summer. The phrygana lands have impressive appearance in spring when numerous annual herbaceous and perennial bulbous species bloom. This spring colour palette will soon be replaced by the austere brown-green or blonde-green shades of the Mediterranean summer.

There is a wide variety of plants in the forest of Moschopodi, and by 2003 about 200 species belonging to 50 families had been identified. The Mediterranean zone is home to a multitude of plants that in spring and summer flood the glades with brightly coloured flowers. Typical species include the orchid family (Orchidaceae), the lily family (Iridaceae), the tulip family (Liliaceae) and many others.

There is a link that has developed between the plant world and man that is undoubtedly as old as mankind! Walking around the forest of Moschopodi we will observe several species of plants and mushrooms that have been known since antiquity: some as symbols of a god, some as ornaments and several for their healing properties in various diseases.
The terrain of Moschopodi is relatively smooth, but in some areas there are significant slopes. On the northern side, which is the watershed towards the plain of Thivaand Lake Yliki, there are many gorges offering unique views.

Hikes and bike rides for young and old are organized in Moschopodi by the active Association of Skiers, Mountaineers and Cyclists of Thiva. For information, please call: 2262022420, 6979216785, 6977204329
