The ancient and beautiful Ellopiais located on the eastern side of Mount Helicon, 20km from Thivaand just 10km from the Corinthian Gulf. The village is built to the southwest of a rocky hill called Kotroni and at the southern edge there is a small river, which flows from Mount Helicon. It is not known when the village was first inhabited.

In the past, the village was located four kilometres further east, on a hill. In this spot there are remains of a settlement and it is called Paleokarantas. Relics of pre-Christian settlements were found at small distances during the cultivation of the fields. They are the remains of small and large settlements, which belonged to the State of Thespiae in antiquity. It is worth seeing a living part of the history of the place and tracing the past of Ellopia.

According to a tradition, during the period of the Ottoman rule, when the Greeks rose up and demanded their freedom, Ellopia, known then as Karantas, also rebelled. The movement was a failure and the inhabitants fled to the mountains to escape the Turks who had turned against them. Papa-Anastasis, the village priest, took refuge in a cave in a huge rock, but the Turks could find him and he was tortured. Since then and until today this huge rock is called the rock of Papa-Anastasis.
