Only fifteen kilometres to the west of Thiva you will find the beautiful Vagia, built amphitheatrically on two low hillsides.

The view from there embraces the large plain of ‘Tinerio’ (Varyko). Opposite the town to the north, the mountain peak Fagas, as locals call it, rises majestically. “Vigla” as the site is known over time, was home to the mythical Sphinx. In the area of Vagia there are also the impressive monasteries of St. John the Theologian – Mazarakis and of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

Vagia is the birthplace of very important scientists, who at the same time were involved in social or national liberation actions. A distinctive figure coming from Vagia is of course the general Biniaris, but also the physician Petros Liakos, who at the dawn of the 20th century was also one of the men of the Sacred Band. Another major figure was Panagis Stenos, who had multifaceted scientific, political and social activity.
