CHAPEL OF AGHIA TRIADA IN THIVA

The parish chapel of Agia Triada, located west of the centre of Thiva, on Kasandrou ring road, is one of the nine parish chapels of the holy church of Agh. Dimitrios-Megali Panagia Thiva and it is situated in an exceptionally unique pine-wooded area, the so called Alsos, which is a lung of oxygen and recreation for the residents of the city and the wider area.
According to archaeologists, there was a pagan temple in the same place in the pre-Christian period, in honour of the mother of the gods, Rhea Didymene.
The entire area under the monumental central Church of the Megali Panagia-Agh. Dimitrios is of course connected to the famous cleansing spring of the ancient queen of Thebes, Dirce, whose spring is preserved to date.

The traveller Pausanias (2nd century AD) in his book, “Boetia”(5,3), records his journey through this location: “passing through the spring of Dirce, I saw the wrecked house of (the famous Theban poet) Pindar, but I also saw a shrine dedicated to the mother (i.e. of the Gods) Dindymene, and inside it was a statue of her, dedicated by Pindar, which had been sculpted by Aristodemus and Socrates, the Thebans (i.e. sculptors)

It is therefore easy to understand that due to the aforementioned natural beauty of the grove, both this sanctuary and the house of the nature-loving poet Pindar were located in the same place where the Chapel stands today.
The Chapel of Aghia Triada is also associated with the CUSTOM OF THE VLACH WEDDING, on Clean Monday, where at noon the Vlach gangs and numerous visitors of the city flock to the courtyard and the hill, linking the ancient past with the present.
