The original name of the magnificent mountain was Asterion, but later on it took the name of Kitheronas after the homonymous king of Plataea.

Kitheronas, this magical mountain range is associated with many deities, ancient heroes and myths of the Theban cycle (Laius, Oedipus). It is bounded to the north by Erythres, Plataea and to the south by Vilia and the settlement Aigosthena (Porto Germeno).
It is an impressive mountain range with altitude of 1409m and its peak is Profitis Ilias or otherwise known as Elatia, at a distance of only 4km from the sea. During the last century there were several animals, such as deers, roes, wild boars and wolves. It is literally overgrown with fir trees up high and pine trees at the lower part.

On the northern edge of the mountain and at an altitude of 580 meters stands the Holy Monastery of the Holy TrinityIt is 4km away from the Municipality of Plataea, while access is easier from Plataea. Green landscape and lush vegetation is the characteristic of the monastery. Towering pine trees, fir trees, walnut trees, oaks, a well, which still supplies water, beautify the landscape and relieve your soul from thoughts, because here you get closer to the “creator” of everything.
