The Holy Monastery of Makariotissa was founded in the 12th century. It is located on the western slopes of Mount Helicon, built at an altitude of about 700 meters above Domvrena.

From the original monastery only the architectural technique of the cloisonné masonry system and the sculptures survive, while its renovation, according to an inscription on the east side of the katholikon, dates back to 1798. Apart from being an important intellectual hub, it also played an essential role in the national issues. During the Ottoman occupation it was a refuge for klephts and armatoles who operated in the mountain range of Mount Helicon. During the revolution of 1821 it supported Karaiskakis in the battle of Domvrenaand was therefore burnt by the Turks on 4 November 1826.

In the Macedonian struggle it offered as a sacrifice its priest Father Chrysostomos Kapetanopoulos, while it took part heroically in the years of the Second World War.

The monastery was manned by a new brotherhood in 1992 and today it operates as an organized community made up of about 20 monks.
During the last few years the monastery has developed considerable commercial activity, producing high quality dairy products (milk, cream, yoghurt, etc.) bearing the name of the monastery and the region of origin.
