Get to know ancient Thiva

Thiva is one of the oldest cities in the world, a mythical territory that gave birth to great heroes and people and offers visitors much excitement. It is the birthplace of the mythical Hercules, the god Dionysus, the poet Pindar, Oedipus, Antigone and the famous General Epaminondas, who was the inspirer of the Oblique Order.

The mythological past of Thiva is perhaps richer than of any other Greek city and represents an important part of the whole Greek Mythology with enchanting myths. It is the city that inspired the great tragedians Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides as well as other lesser known ones to create timeless and world famous masterpieces (Seven on Thebes, Oedipus Tyrannus, Antigone, Epigoni etc.).

The city of Thiva has one of the most significant Archaeological Museums in Greece as some of its collections are rare or unique of their kind. The museum’s exhibits come from excavations in Viotia and chronologically cover the civilization of the region from the neolithic to the post-Byzantine period. An important feature is the medieval tower of Saint Omer that is open to visitors.
